Voted Fairbanks' and Alaska's best museum, the University of Alaska's Museum of the North is an amazing exhibition of everything to do with the state. Travel through time from prehistoric ages to the time of the land bridge crossing, the arrival of the Russians and finally the gold rush era. A must-see is the fantastically preserved remains of a frozen Ice Age steppe bison, while the displays on Native arts and artefacts are absorbing. There are lots of audio visual exhibits as well, featuring documentaries on the aurora borealis, native dancing and traditional whaling and sealing.
Fairbanks museum open: mid-May to September, daily - 09:00 to 19:00; October to mid-May, Monday to Friday - 09:00 to 17:00, Saturday and Sunday - 12:00 to 17:00

If you happen to miss out on the Ice Festival in March, you can always get your fill of stunning ice carvings at this excellent and unique Fairbanks museum. In the museum you can see some of the best ice art in the world, as well as photographs of the entrants in the annual Ice Festival and other displays dealing with ice. Come prepared for some freezing temperatures however, as you will probably want to enter some of the colder rooms to view the actual ice carvings themselves.
